The Carnival Parade 2007

A post carnival report from 2007

This years Carnival had big plans:

It was billed as the best event in the area and the biggest Carnival ever!

It was to start with The Parade with the theme of The World of Children left Ascot and travelled through South Ascot and Sunninghill where walkers joined in at St Michaels School and Kings Corner finally arriving at Broomhall Recreation Ground, soggy but cheerful!

A very busy afternoon had been planned:

A sheepdog herding sheep - and ducks!; ferret races; throw a welly; three scout teams racing to put up and take down a tent to celebrate their centenary; Cliff Roe presenting medals and the shield to St Francis School for winning the football tournament and medals to St Michaels School as runners-up; a celebration of the winners of the art competition; a lucky programme draw at intervals during the afternoon; dancing round the Maypole; Morris Dancing; doggie races with a rosette for the Carnival Champion; a beer and Pimms tent; live music; a Giant Slide; a childrens entertainer; a Victorian Carousel; an ice cream van; sticks of rock; and a hog-roast. Plus stalls for: Farmers Market produce, bric-a-brac, garden plants, bottle and toy tombolas, Ascot Matters, the Ramblers Association, a Healing tent and much more!

all co-ordinated by a Master of Ceremonies.

And what actually happened?? The night before we had an unpredicted downpour equivalent to about a months worth of rain! The field and all those brave souls who turned up got wet, very wet and extremely muddy!

The events had to be severely curtailed but we still managed to put on about two dozen stalls manned by intrepid stallholders PLUS : the sheepdog herding sheep and ducks, the ferret races, the three scout teams racing to put up and take down a tent to celebrate their centenary, the Victorian Carousel, the beer and Pimms tent, the hog-roast and who could forget the dancing round the Maypole!!

There are some wonderful pictures which you can see by clicking on photos2007 at the top of the page, just to show that you can still have fun even when you are soaked and up to your axles in mud!! A very big THANK YOU to everyone who braved the elements to come and support the Carnival despite the weather.

It cannot happen again next year, can it . . . ?
