The Farandole
Andrew Godfrey is a traditional dance expert and helped organise the Maypole dancing at the carnival last year. He will be on hand again this year to teach us all the “Farandole” a medieval chain dance which looks spectacular with masses of people joining in, making arches and “threading the needle”. We will make a chain and meander through our own medieval village in the centre of the field.

The 2009 Sunningdale Carnival,
Sunday,13th September 2009

Record numbers of people attend the Carnival!
It was the 33rd year of this family event, which brought together the local villages in the area for a day of fun and entertainment for all ages. Following the theme of ‘Medieval’, there was a real party and community atmosphere with something for everyone to enjoy.

Approximately 4,500 people attended the carnival this year, which is the highest number to date. The grounds were busy with people enjoying various activities i.e.

The MC Julian Hirst did a fantastic job and kept the crowds updated with what was going on and also announced the ‘lucky numbers’ for which their were fantastic Spot Prizes.

The Medieval Combat Society joined us this year to add to the medieval theme and they put on some fantastic activities such as Archery, Medieval Combat Fighting and Dancing. With all their costumes, equipment and enthusiasm they really embraced the theme and people enjoyed taking part and watching them perform.

The day started off with The Children’s Fancy Dress Competition. There were plenty of imaginative fantastic costumes but the winner was Harvey Crook who was dressed as a knight.

Next the prize giving for the ‘Schools Art Competition’ presented by Alan Kluckow took place on the Village Green. There were individual entries for ‘FLAGS’ and school entries for a ‘School Shield’. The Jousting Tournament took place at 2:30pm at the Long Arena. 16 budding knights competed for the prize ‘a half day all terrain adventure at any of the 8 UK Land Rover experience centres’. After a competitive fun tournament, a Scotsman named Lawrence Robertson was crowned Sir Lancelot 2009.

The day ended with the Dog Agility Display and Competitions. Paddywack did a great dog agility demonstration with their own dogs and they opened it up to the spectators and their dogs. A dozen dogs took part, racing through tunnels and jumping three jumps. Prizes for the best large dog and best small dog were awarded. The Dog Races were also very competitive and there were 2 fantastic winning dogs in 1st and 2nd place – great fun for the dogs and all the spectators watching.

Carnival Donations

The carnival is organised by a team of volunteers and is a platform for all the charitable and not for profit organisations to raise money for their causes. All monies collected on the day through various activities organised by the committee and on the gate pay for the event. Although we aim to cover our costs, if we do make a profit the carnival fund is topped up for the following year and then any excess funds are donated to worthy local causes that do not have any other means of funding. The carnival committee consider all applications and decide which causes to help. If you are a local organisation who have restricted funds with no other sources of income and need help to finance a project, please contact:
